The difference starts with heat.
A traditional sauna uses a heater to warm the cabin. Infrared uses panels to provide radiant heat. Both need a suitable installation, and the actual experience depends on the model and how it is used.
| What to compare | Traditional | Infrared |
|---|---|---|
| Heating approach | Sauna heater and stones | Radiant heating panels |
| What to confirm | Heater rating, clearances, ventilation and permitted water use | Panel placement, power rating, clearances and controls |
| Installation | Depends on heater, cabin and local requirements | Depends on panel system, cabin and local requirements |
| Cost comparison | Compare complete installed cost | Compare complete installed cost |
Choose with three questions.
- What heat experience do you prefer? If possible, try each style before buying.
- Where will it go? Check usable floor space, height, ventilation and access.
- What does your home support? Confirm electrical requirements with a qualified electrician.
Avoid comparing labels alone.
Check the actual model specifications rather than assuming all infrared saunas use the same supply, or every traditional sauna has the same warm-up time. Ask for the manual, technical drawing and itemized quote.
